SAMSUNG COMES SECOND PLACE IN THE AFRICAN SMARTPHONE MARKET1 min read

Tecno claimed top spot in 2020 African smartphone market share as it overtook Samsung to become the market leader. Tecno, Itel and Infinix amassed 18%, 12% and 7% respectively in Africa smartphone market share in 2020. It is worth noting that these three brands are owned by a Chinese company – Transsion Holdings.

Transsion has dominated the African market by strategically positioning themselves by offering devices that are suitable and affordable for the African Market. Itel claimed 12% by offering more budget friendly smartphones that its sister brands Tecno and Infinix.

Samsung who had a market share of 18% in 2019 saw it drop to 15% in 2020 no thanks to issues with the supply chain due to the pandemic and a slow reaction towards the end of the year. Things should get better for Samsung this year as it has already launched its new Galaxy A smartphones in multiple markets in the continent.
